Diese Ausstellung ist Konrad Knebel zu seinem 90. Geburtstag gewidmet. Seine Weggefährten Wolfgang Leber (geb. 1936), Harald Metzkes (geb. 1929) und Hans-Otto-Schmidt (geb. 1945) gratulieren mit Berlin-Motiven.
4 x BERLIN – historisch-biografisch, mit südlichem Flair, lebendig und auch humorvoll, in verträumter Stille. Vier Künstler zeigen ihre Stadt – aber ist es wirklich die selbe Stadt?
…Kaum ein anderer Maler hat dieser Stadt so viel malerisches Interesse entgegengebracht wie Konrad Knebel. Seine Stadtlandschaften mit ihren verbrannten und verlebten Fassaden wirken wie Kulissen nach einer letzten Theatervorstellung. Die Darsteller haben die Szene schon verlassen. Die Bilder schweigen. Das Merkwürdige – Berlin ist keine Schönheit. Einem Maler könnten viele andere Motive zum Thema werden, aber Knebels Herz ist für Berlin entflammt…

Konrad Knebel hat das Glück, mitten im Motiv zu sitzen, zu spazieren und länger zwischen den Bauten, Anbauten, Fensterfronten, Verschlägen, Einfahrten, Läden und den Aufschriften, die uns die Vergangenheit der Bauten zeigen, zu gehen und uns etwas Vergehendes wieder erscheinen zu lassen. Wir werden selbst davon ergriffen, da es schöne Bilder sind.

This exhibition is dedicated to Konrad Knebel on his 90th birthday. His fellow painters Wolfgang Leber (born 1936), Harald Metzkes (born 1929) and Hans-Otto-Schmidt (born 1945) wish him a happy birthday with Berlin motifs.

…Almost no other painter has devoted as much painterly attention to this metropolis as Konrad Knebel. With their burnt and faded façades, his cityscapes recall theatrical sets after one last performance. The actors have already left the stage. The images are silent. The strange thing is – Berlin is no beauty. There are plenty of other motifs a painter might take as his subject, but Knebel’s heart burns with a passion for Berlin…

Konrad Knebel has the good fortune of sitting in the midst of the motif, of strolling and lingering between the buildings, extensions, windowfronts, sheds, entranceways, shops, and inscriptions that reveal the past of this architecture, and making something that has passed away reappear for us. We are likewise captivated by it, for these are beautiful images.
